St Andrew: The Story

St Andrew was born around first century BC in Bethsaida (house of fishing), which was a deserted area in the south of the Jordon river. By birth, he was a Jew, and a fisher man. Recorded history states that he was the son of Jonah, or John, and his brother was Peter.

St Andrew was a disciple of St John, the Baptist. It was St John who asked St Andrew to follow Jesus. St Andrew and Peter, both were fisher-men by profession. When Jesus said that he will make “fishers of men”, they both started following Jesus, and they both were part of the famed 12-Apostles, who migrated to different parts of the world to spread the holy and divine teachings of Jesus. It is usually said that St Andrew was among the top three Apostles of Jesus.

St Andrew has always been mentioned as one of the most pious, hard working and devout Christian, always helping the needy and fighting the evil. He was crucified in the same fashion as Jesus, and the symbol of his crucifixion became the national flag of Scotland.

Around 10th century, St Andrew was officially designated as the Patron Saint of Scotland. Besides Scotland, St Andrew is the patron saint of Greece, Russia, Romania, Ukraine, Malta and Prussia.

The legends of St Andrew and the holy deeds accomplished by him has inspired millions of Christians all over the world, and it is due to this devotion and respect that November 30th is celebrated as St Andrew’s Day, all over Scotland.

Hi! Happy St-Andrews Day, even though I never celebrate that day, but I recognized St. Andrew from the 12 Apostles, yes he's one of Jesus pupil, and he's a great apostle. Love the picture of Mel Gibson! Thank you for sharing!
